While asbestos does have a variety of useful characteristics, such as resistance to electricity, heat, flame, chemicals, and biodegradation, it is also a known carcinogen. Thus, as this form of cancer has only been recognized for the past 50 years, there are still many forms of clinical trials going on to hopefully treat the problem. There exist several different phases of trials, depending on what stage of research the doctors are on. Phase I studies the efficacy of the drug and the maximum dosages. Phase II tests the information learned in phase I, and it helps narrow down the appropriate doses. Phase III is a comparison study that rates the new drug or treatment method against others that are already available.
