Lycopene Lung Cancer Treatment

Lycopene is what gives tomatoes and some other fruits, their deep red color. But Lycopene is also a powerful antioxidant that has shown remarkable effect of degenerative diseases. Tomatoes are the only major dietary source of lycopene. According to a study at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) presented that tomatoes help reduce the risk of certain cancers.

Lycopene is naturally present in human plasma in greater amounts than betaCarotene and other important carotenoids. This may point to its greater biological significance in the human immune system. The researchers at P & S and Harlem Hospital examined the association between lung cancer and lycopene.

The investigators collected blood samples from 93 patients with non-small cell lung cancer and 102 control subjects, in a case-control study. They tested the samples for levels of certain micronutrients such as retinol, lycopene and testedBeta-carotene.

The researchers found no significant differences between subjects and patients with lung cancer. in most micro-nutrients for which they have the tests. But they found that patients with lung cancer had significantly lower concentrations of lycopene.

After adjusting for age, race, sex, drinking, smoking, vitamin supplements, occupational exposure and season, investigators found that the group with the lowest lycopene, had almost a threefold increaseincreased risk of cancer with the group with the highest lycopene levels compared.

When the investigators evaluated smokers, they found that the group with the lowest blood levels of lycopene had four times the risk of cancer than the group with the highest lycopene levels. According to Dr. Jean G. Ford, assistant professor of medicine and principal investigator:

"We concluded from our results that low intake of lycopene may be a risk factor for lung cancer, especiallySmokers. Although our results are preliminary, they add to increasing evidence that diets rich in tomatoes and tomato strongly to a reduced risk of certain cancers are. "
